For our next Relief Society activity, we will be discussing President Hinckley's book and putting together Family Home Evening packets with the 10 Virtues. Please meet at 7pm February 15th, 2012, in the Relief Society Room at the Stake Centre. For this activity you will need a small binder or duotang. The remaining supplies will be provided.

Also, please mark on your calendars March 17th, 10am-1pm for the Relief Society Anniversary party. Further details will be posted but it will be a fun morning followed by scrumptious food.

Good Morning Sisters! Here is a photo of one of the kimonos that we will be making on Wednesday night. Our model is Sage S, Jen's daughter.

We would like to remind you that material donations are greatly appreciated. Jersey knit is the best material. You do not have to go buy any but are perhaps ready to recycle some jersey knit sheet sets or XL T-shirts. Smaller T-shirts can be turned into hats/toques. Fleece material is also good for some quilts.

Hi Sisters! We have been asked to post about the blue reserved chair covers that used to be kept in the library for use of the librarians so that the chairs nearest the doors in the RS room would be kept for them. Activities in November

Sisters, please mark your calendars for November 16th at 7pm, and November 30th at 6:45pm.

Our first activity is our regular November activity which shall be an information and creative night for a group called, "Mothers Without Borders." This is a group started by a sister in Utah which we learn about from Patty Perry (Kristi Lafontaine's mother). Sister Perry has travelled to Zambia with the group and will let us know about her experience and where our 'efforts' will be going. The plan is to make some blankets and baby kimonos to send with the group on one of their trips. We are asking anyone with either T-shirt tubing or simple large or Xlarge t-shirts in good condition that we can cut down to bring it. Also anyone with fleece for blankets that they would like to donate would be appreciated. Also, donations such as new pencils, crayons, yarn, or clean sweaters and other clothing is appreciated. There is a great description in our Sunday binders.

Our second activity this month will be "Christmas in November" on Wednesday, November 30th. We will not be having an activity in December as this will replace it. We plan to meet at the church and then will have a "Progressive" Christmas sharing night, visiting in the homes of 3 of our sisters and participating in some Christmas traditions through the night. Come participate in some Christmas Spirit to kick of the season on a spiritual note.

Here are the promised recipes for the detergent and the lip balm that we made at the Relief Society meeting on Saturday. IF you have any questions about them, ask Sister Imes.

Home made Laundry Detergent

2 cups hot water

1/2 bar sunlight soap

1/2 cup washing soda

1/4 cup Borax

Grate bar of soap. Add to hot water in saucepan on stove. Stir over medium heat until soap is dissolved. Fill a 21/2 gallon bucket with 18 cups of hot water. Add melted soap mixture to bucket along with washing soda and borax. Add 18 more cups of hot water. Put lid on and leave overnight. Next day stir and fill soap container 1/2 full with soap and the rest with water. Shake before use. Use 1/4 cup per load for front loading machines and 3/4cup for top load.

If you want to add a scent, 6 drops of essential oil safe for bath is what is recommended per gallon, adjust to your liking.

Generic Lip Balm Recipe

2 Tbsp coconut oil

1 Tbsp grated cocoa butter

1 Tbsp grated beeswax or wax pearls

¼ tsp vitamin E (3 punctured squeezed out capsules or 3 spritzes)

3 drops essential oil/flavor (zest of citrus fruit works but then you need

to strain through cheesecloth)

may add new lipstick as color or can purchase special colorants

Over low heat, melt oil. If you plan to add zest or green teas, add now

and allow to simmer for 5 minutes, then you need to strain the oil.

Add cocoa butter & wax, stir until melted. Remove from heat, add vit

E & essential oil if desired. Stir well. Transfer to jar & allow to set.

Chocolate Chip Lip Balm

3 Tbsp grated or shaved cocoa butter

5 organic chocolate chips (the better the quality the better the lip balm)

1 vitamin E capsule, punctured and squeezed out (or 1 spritz of liquid vit E)

Place all ingredients in a microwave safe bowl. Cook on high for 30 seconds, stir; repeat steps until all ingredients are melted. Transfer to a clean lip balm tube or tin. Let set – Don’t Touch!!

Minty Chocolate Lip Balm Recipe

1 Tbsp grated beeswax or beeswax pearls

1/8c. coconut oil

½ Tbsp shea butter

½ Tbsp cocoa butter

½ tsp honey

1 tsp cocoa powder

1/8 tsp vitamin E (2 punctured, squeezed out capsules or 2 spritzes)

3 drops peppermint essential oil

Place the butters in a small pot or double boiler. Add oil. Heat on low for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add beeswax & stir well. Once melted, remove from heat, add essential oil, honey, vitamin E and cocoa powder, whisking well the whole time. Once smooth, transfer to jar and allow to set.

Luscious Lavender Lip Balm

4 Tbsp jojoba, almond, or olive oil

1 Tbsp grated beeswax or beeswax pearls

1 tsp honey

¼ tsp vitamin E oil (3 punctured, squeezed capsules or 3 spritzes)

7 drops Lavender (or other) essential oil

1 tsp cocoa powder (optional)

1 tsp colored, natural lipstick (optional to add color)

Warm oils & beeswax in small pot. Stir until beeswax completely melted. Remove from heat and whisk in essential oil, vitamin E, cocoa powder, and colored lipstick. Place bottom of pan in shallow pan of ice water and continue whisking as you add the honey. Quickly transfer to jars

Recipes for laundry detergent and lip balm...

We have had some requests for recipes for the laundry soap and lip balms. All the recipes will be posted to the blog immediately after the activity, and/or handed out at the activity itself. If we post them all now, no one will come!
If it wasn't clear in the previous post, please bring a container with a lid to take home your laundry soap sample. We have small lip balm jars so you don't need to bring your own for that activity.
Also, just a reminder, please make sure that you are signed up for the activity (and that your friends that you wish to bring are also signed up). We are pre packaging the card kits and if we don't have numbers may not have enough kits.
For future planning as well, we will be having a meeting November 16th at 7pm at the Stake Center involving humanitarian service projects and then our Christmas meeting will actually be on November 30 due to the change in activity nights that we have had this fall. It will be a fun "Christmas in November" meeting involving great food and activities. More details to come.

RS Meeting (aka the meeting previously known as Homemaking/Enrichment/Super Saturday)

Yay! We have a fun Saturday meeting planned for October 29. There will be a sheet in the binders to sign up so we know how many people to expect. Please sign up or we may not have enough food or supplies. Please feel free to bring friends but also please let us know if you are planning on bringing a friend so that we can count them in our numbers. We are going to start off our day with 3 activities. The plan is for everyone to rotate through the groups and attend all the classes.

In no particular order, the classes are:
1. Laundry Preparedness - taught by Sister May
For this class you will need to bring an empty laundry detergent container as you will go home with your very own freshly made, homemade laundry detergent. For those with scent concerns, this is scent free so you too can try some fantastic (and CHEAP to make!) laundry soap. For those who love scents we will have two essential oils, safe for soaps, available for you to add to your soap. We will also be demonstrating an emergency laundry kit for those interested.

Who knew these 2 things and a bar of soap could help you do 400 loads of laundry!

2. Cards - taught by Sister Simmonds

Disclaimer: Greeting cards not exactly as shown (I was just trying to show the idea of craftiness!)

We have put together some packages of greeting cards that you get to make to use for perhaps some visiting teaching messages or just to show someone you care. We will have samples of the cards at church outside the RS room for you to see how quick, easy and fun these are. The best part... Sisters Simmonds and Rushton have cut and stamped everything ahead of time for you, you just get to come hang out and make them.

3. Lip Balm - taught by Sister Imes
We will have 3 different lip balms to sample as the morning goes on. These are simple things to make in any flavor or color you can imagine. They are great things to consider making for close friends or family, or just for yourself for a little bit of pampering. Because these require some time to set, the plan is that we will review the recipes and how to make them and then at the end of the morning everyone can return for their very own jar of lip balm to take home with them. We will likely have some extras and these will be offered to those who would like them for $1 each. Your official sample is free though. Just FYI, anyone with a nut allergy needs to let us know as we use Shea butter in many of the samples which would be a definite no-no for allergic sisters.

Disclaimer: These are not the exact tubes but similar. If you notice the name on the photo though, if you are interested in making your own lip gloss at home and can't come to the class, this website nicely walks you through everything you might need to know.

After our classes we will be having lunch. We have tried to take in to account all potential food concerns and know that everyone will find something yummy to eat. During the lunch hour we would like everyone to visit but there will also be a book exchange table. Please bring a book, or books, to exchange. There is no particular topic or kind of book that we are looking for, just anything with appropriate material, that is in good shape that you think someone else might like to enjoy if you are finished with it.

SO, just as a recap, in 4 short hours, you will get to take home some lip balm, some laundry detergent, 3+ greeting cards, eat some yummy food and maybe find something fun to read. The cost? FREE. We like free, don't you? Come join us for a great event. Remember to sign up or let someone know to sign you up, and let us know if you are bringing a friend.

Temple Trip

The RS sisters will be having a temple trip on July 23, 2011. Please plan to meet at the chapel at 7:30am. We will plan to depart by 8am and attend the 11:30am session. There will be sign up sheets in the binders next week at church so we can get an idea as to how many want to attend.

Also, for your interest, our lesson today was taught by Sister Schlenker. In addition to lovely home baked cookies we also went on a 'field trip' to the Family History Center. It was a great lesson reminding us to keep close to our families and our ancestors - they are waiting for us to do their temple work in July!

Thank you to all who were able to attend the BBQ. It was a great time. Thank you especially to Kristi and Carman for arranging the etching activity. Just a reminder of the BBQ that will be in 2 short days, on June 16, at Sister Imes' house. Please remember to bring your salads and your glass dish for the etching if you signed up. RS Barbeque

Please mark your calendars for our RS Barbeque. This will be happening at 6pm on June 16th at Sister Imes' house. For those of you who don't where she lives but do know where Pres. & Sister Hill used to live, it's the same place!
There is a sign up sheet for potluck salads and desserts in the RS binders at church. The RS will provide the hamburgers & veggieburgers and all the trimmings. We will also be doing an activity with glass etching. Keep your eyes and ears open for more information about this event. It will be fun.

Shrimp Dip

1 pkg 8oz. cream cheese softened

2 tsp lemon juice

½ tsp worcestershire sauce

1/3 cup whipping cream

1 cup broken shrimp drained

Beat cream cheese. Add lemon juice, worcestershire sauce and cream. Beat until smooth. Beat in shrimp.

Cheezy Ranch Dip

2 cups cottage cheese

2 cups sour cream

1 pkg Ranch Dressing

2 cups cheddar and monterey cheese mix

Mix cottage cheese, sour cream and ranch dressing. Fold in cheese.

Homemade Dill Dip

2 cups sour cream

1 ½ cups mayo

3 tsp beau monde seasoning

3 tsp dill

3 tsp parsley

1 ½ tsp onion flakes

Mix sour cream and mayo together. Stir in spices.

Uncle Dan’s Classic Ranch Dip and California Dill Dip were made according to the directions on the package.

Spinach Dip

Warm Spinach Dip

1 250 ml cream cheese

2 cups grated cheese

1 frozen box spinach-chopped (thawed and drained)

(500grams)

1 tomato cubed

1/4 small purple onion

Melt together and mix in the tomato at the end.

Serve with tortillas, crackers, or french bread.

Relief Society Anniversary Party

Hi Sisters! The party is going to be this Thursday, March 3rd. (I must admit I have had a hard time not calling it the 17th of March Party!) We will be having a short program about the history of the Relief Society followed by yummy food and visiting. We are having various "dips" and associated food stuffs as well as dessert. December 19 Lesson - The Sabbath Day

The word "Sabbath" comes from a Hebrew word meaning "rest". In the beginning the Lord spent six days creating the earth, but on the seventh day, He rested. He called this the Sabbath. He set the example, showing us that we should honor the Sabbath by resting from all our work.

The Lord told the people of Israel that the Sabbath was very important - that their obedience in honoring it was a sign of their faithfulness to Him.

The Sabbath was observed as directed by the Lord until the time of Jesus Christ. During the centuries, many uninspired religious leaders placed many restrictions on what a person could do on the Sabbath. For example, they taught that a fire could not be started or put out on the Sabbath. A person could untie a knot only if it could be done with one hand. One mile was the limit anyone cold walk. Broken bones could not be reset until after the Sabbath.

It became so difficult for the people to obey all the rules that they forgot the true purpose of the Sabbath day. Rather than being a blessing and a joy, the Sabbath became a burden.

In modern times the Lord has repeated his commandment that we should remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.

President Thomas S. Monson has said: "The Lord has given the Sabbath day for your benefit and has commanded you to keep it holy. May activities are appropriate for the Sabbath. Bear in mind, however, that Sunday is not a holiday. Sunday is a holy day."

Rather than giving us strict rules for proper Sabbath observance, Jesus taught principles that should guide us in choosing proper Sabbath-day activities.

Three scriptures to read: Mark 3:1-5, D&C 59:9-13, and Isaiah 58:13-14. From these three scriptures, we can get three questions to ask ourselves about our Sabbath activities.

1. Is my action holy? Is it doing good or of service to God?
2. Does it help keep me "unspotted from the world"?
3. Is it honoring the Lord, or am I selfishly following my own desires?

These guidelines provide a measure for deciding if an activity is appropriate for the Sabbath. The Lord has promised us great temporal and spiritual blessings if we keep the Sabbath day holy.

Kerry had four suggestions to guide us:

1. Focus on what you can do.
2. Plan ahead.
3. Spend time with your family.
4. Pray for help.

December 12 Announcements

Next Saturday, our ward will be having a Youth Temple Trip. If you're not a youth, but would still like to go to the temple, Brother Oliverson has arranged to take a van to the temple. If you would like to go, please call him to reserve a spot. There is no charge for this!!

Looking ahead - Only two more Sundays of 9:00 am Sacrament Meeting time. Don't forget we change to 11:00 am on January 2!!

What Shall We Give

December 12 Lesson - The Sacrament

Sister Coakley taught us a great lesson on Sunday about the Sacrament. We were reminded that Christ himself introduced the ordinance of the sacrament to us, first through His Apostles before his cruxifiction, and then again, when He appeared to the Nephites in the Americas. We talked about the sacramental prayers, and how we make promises to our Heavenly Father and he makes promises to us in return. We promise to take Jesus' name upon ourself, to keep His commandments, to always remember Him and to repent. In return, we are promised that we will have His spirit to be with us, that we will have a remission of our sins, and that He will influence our thoughts and actions. The sisters discussed different ways of preparing to take the sacrament. They ranged from coming to church on time, so that you could sit and listen to the prelude music and feel the right Spirit, to preparing all week for the Sacrament, perhaps by making stories of Jesus Christ part of your everyday life, such as reading scripture stories to your children. Sister Coakley also encouraged us to take the time to read the following Ensign article, from October 2008. The Arms of Safety

On a side note, we are sad to have this be Sister Coakley's last lesson, as both she and Sister Breneman have been called to serve in the new Primary Presidency. We will miss seeing you both in Relief Society!!

We had a wonderful Christmas lesson this Sunday in Relief Society, taught by Kathy Petersen. We had some Christmas stores read: The Christmas Miracle, Dec 2008 New Era, The Christmas Miracle; One Last Carol from the December 2001 Ensign One Last Carol.
We were also treated to a song "Silent Night" by Elder Newman.

November 28 Lesson

Sister Scoville gave a great lesson on Sunday taken from the talk by Quinton L. Cook, ‘Our Fathers Plan is Big Enough For all His Children.’ She started by reminding us of the Plan of Salvation and how when learned of it in the pre-existence that we shouted for joy.

Why did we shout for joy? Several of the ladies said it was because we wanted to be like our Heavenly Father and knowing that we would come to earth and receive a body and be able to prove ourselves along with the great sacrifice and atonement of the Savior that we could return back home and become like Him. Another Sister said that we shouted for joy because we realized the full vision of what, and how great the rewards of that ‘Plan’ truly will be.

So why rejoice? We know the gospel! And we know we have a loving Heavenly Father! Why would we not rejoice?

Sister Scoville gave the quote, “Even though our journey may be fraught with tribulation, the destination is truly glorious”.

We live in a world where many people don’t believe the heavens are open, or they lack the faith that somewhere there are answers to their questions here on earth. We as church members need to realize that we don’t know everything but that the Lord does and that is why he has given us the Gospel of Jesus Christ to help us in our mortal journey. We will attain the reward through our actions and the way we chose to live our lives, through the atonement of our elder brother, Jesus Christ, and through the restoration of the gospel. How blessed we are to have this knowledge.

In closing Sister Scoville read the words to the last verse from ‘Come, Come Ye Saints’ and reminded us that “the true destination is paradise and the reward is celestial life.

We had a wonderful lesson today taught by Kerri on The Gifts of the Spirit. The scriptures and modern-day prophets teach us that there are many spiritual gifts. Their purpose, among other things, is to give us strength, lead us to do good, help us resist temptation, encourage and edify us, increase our wisdom, help us judge righteously, and help us qualify for eternal life.

We are taught that in order to receive any spiritual gift, we must be worthy of it. The Lord has said that spiritual gifts "are given for the benefit of those who love me and keep my commandments, and him that seeketh so to do; that all may be benefited that seek or that ask of me". (D & C 46:9)

The lesson talks about 12 specific gifts of the spirit, and we split into groups to summarize them.

Neal A Maxwell taught "our gifts and opportunities differ; some are more visible and impactful.... We all have at least one gift and an open invitation to seek 'earnestly the best gifts."

We can do that by:
1. Pray and ask for help.
2. Obtain and read often your patriarchal blessing, which may identify some spiritual gifts.
3. Observe what traits and talents seem to come naturally to you.
4. Accept calls that come from priesthood leaders.
5. Notice compliments you receive from others.
6. Study the scriptures and messages from Church leaders.
7. Observe those who possess the gift.
8. Practice using the gift.

We were challenged to think of one or two spiritual gifts that we have or that we should seek after. Also to study D & C 46 and claim it's wonderful promises for ourselves and for those we love and serve.

Our numbers were few on Sunday, but we were strong in Spirit. Thanks Lorelei for a great lesson on the Gift of the Holy Ghost. We learned about the difference between the Holy Ghost and the gift of the Holy Ghost; we may be temporarily guided by the Holy Ghost, but that is not continuous until we are baptized and receive the laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Boyd K. Packer said "The Holy Ghost speaks with a voice that you feel more than you hear. It is described as a “still small voice.” And while we speak of “listening” to the whisperings of the Spirit, most often one describes a spiritual prompting by saying, “I had a feeling …”

"The Prophet Joseph Smith explained: "A person may profit by noticing the first intimation of the spirit of revelation; for instance, when you feel pure intelligence flowing into you, it may give you sudden strokes of ideas, so that by noticing it, you may find it fulfilled the same day or soon;... those things that were presented unto your minds by the Spririt of God, will come to pass; and thus by learning the Spirit of God and understanding it, you may grow into the principle of revelation, until you become perfect in Christ Jesus."

The gift of the Holy ghost is one of God's greatest gifts to us. Through the Holy Ghost, we know that God lives, that Jesus is the Christ, and that His Church has been restored to the earth.

As a Presidency, we realize that we have so many sisters who serve in other auxillaries like YW and Primary. We also have some sisters that are are unable to attend church at all. We thought it would be a good idea to start a Relief Society Blog so that everyone who has internet access can catch up on what's going on. And besides, don't we ALL want to know what's going on?! We'll try to post as often as we can.
